Law Clerk Program

The Ventura County Public Defender’s Office law clerk program offers an unparalleled training opportunity for aspiring public defenders in California.  Law clerks are paired with attorney mentors for the duration of their clerkships and gain multi-faceted exposure to misdemeanor and felony criminal law practice.  Clerks receive the opportunity to interview clients, assess cases, draft motions and legal memoranda, visit clients in jail, write expungement motions, work with veteran’s issues, and more.  Certified law clerks may appear on the record and argue motions in some matters, under attorney supervision.  The Ventura County Public Defender’s Office Law Clerk Program is competitive, unpaid, and rigorous, and carries no guarantee of future employment with the office.
